The Original Bed from Tempur-Pedic is actually not the original bed sold by Tempurpedic, but it is similar to the beds first offered by this company. It’s a firmer mattress, consisting of 2.8 inches of Tempur-Foam on top of a base layer of regular foam, making the mattress about 8 inches high total.
If don’t know a lot about memory foam, be sure to read what you need to know about memory foam mattresses. All of that information applies to this bed, and in addition, there are a few more things to know.
Who is it for and what sizes does it come in?
The OriginalBed by Tempur-pedic is aimed at children and teenagers. The Mattress Reporter does not recommend allowing children younger than 6 years old to sleep on memory foam beds because they may find it difficult to roll over in the night. Having said that, many kids (especially teenagers) love sleeping on a memory foam bed. The low cost of the Original Bed is a great opportunity for these kids to get exactly the bed they want.
Because this age group rarely uses a mattress larger than full size, the Tempur Pedic OriginalBed only comes in twin, long twin, and full sizes. The bed fits standard sheets for these size beds, and it includes a removable, washable terrycloth cover.
Mattress Bases and Box Springs
The Originalbed is compatible with several types of bases. First of all, this is a no-turn mattress, meaning that you do not need to flip or rotate the mattress, ever. One option is to simply put the bed on top of a flat surface, such as the base of some types of platform beds. Another option is a traditional box spring set or a reduced profile box spring.
Another option is to get an adjustable base like the Ergo adjustable base . This allows the bed to be moved into several positions, including a sitting position where it’s much easier to get in and out of bed. This can be a great help for some people.
Reasons to buy a Tempur-pedic Original Bed
The Mattress Reporter recommends the Tempur-Pedic Original bed for certain people:
- For parents who want their teenager or older child to sleep on a great, quality memory foam mattress. Many kids who have trouble sleeping find that their problems are alleviated by sleeping on an extra comfortable mattress like this.
- For young people who live in an apartment or dorm, can’t fit a larger mattress, or can’t afford one of the better Tempur-Pedic beds. This bed is comfortable, no doubt about it, but it’s not the best you can get. Plus, it doesn’t come in queen or king sizes.
For most other people (including couples who need a larger queen or king size bed), we recommend you take a look at the next model up, the AdvantageBed, or one of the Tempur-HD models like the Rhaposody bed. Both of these are more expensive beds but they more than make up for it in thicker foam, larger sizes, and better comfort.
